Kodingen is a cloud-based, web development tool. Kodingen also offers a community aspect to its environment so that other developers can review and encourage one's work along the way. Coders can start working pretty much right away, there isn't too much that they need to setup. Unlike local host providers, Kodingen offers an online, accessible place for developers. Therefore, developers could code from practically anywhere. Additionally, teams can work together on projects through the community features of this site. Kodingen's coding terminal is fully-functional. As far as programming languages, this application supports Ruby, Python, Perl, PHP and node.js. The app catalog contains not only the ready-made apps from Kodingen, but also some user-contributed ones as well. Overall, Kodingen is a solid coding environment that any developer could benefit from.Show more screenshots »
Kodingen was developed by a pair of brothers names Devrim and Sinan Yasar. Devrim Yasar was the CTO at Betterfly and is today the CTO at Buzzd. It really seems to be the first free and public development environment. The application seems to be social community first and a development tool second. As of April 2012, Kodingen is in its Beta. Kodingen will be called Koding in its future forms.
When it comes to differentiating Kodingen from other applications, it is the app's collaboration and community features that do so. It also appears that they Kodingen is actively developing this tool and will be bringing in additional software-release tools (like GIT for example) in the near future.
Kodingen is incredibly easy to start using and requires barely any setup aside from registration. The app looks similar to other development terminals out there, except that it is running in one's Internet browser. The app is fast and responsive and there were no bugs encountered at any point during this review.
To register for a new Kodingen account users will want to sign up to be alerted as to when the app is accepting new users for its beta preview. As of April 2012, it does not appear that new users are being accepted to the site.
Kodingen is free, at least today in its beta. Its aim is to take its application and market it in the enterprise space. However, pricing is not currently available.
Kodingen is definitely a site to watch for developers, IT workers or anyone with an interest in coding. For those who can use it on the free beta- it is an excellent deal!
